Periodic Physical Exam
For anybody with a chronic illness, especially those taking medication, regular visits to the doctor are necessary. Discussing symptoms, examining for problems related to the disease or the use of the medicine, and appropriate laboratory testing are required adjuncts in the care program.
In recent years, the value of a periodic physical exam for healthy people has been called into question. Fortunately, most asymptomatic people under 50 years old will have a negative medical interview or exam. Indeed, most healthy young people do not go to the doctor unless they have an acute illness that does not resolve readily.
There are, however, reasons to see a doctor even for the healthy young person. Cancer screening is a well recognized goal for all age groups. PAP smears for women and exams for men are recommended. Measurement of cholesterol levels, with the follow-up explanation, applies to all people beginning as early as the teenage years.
Getting to know your primary care doctor is a reason in itself for a periodic health exam. Crises can occur. If you or someone you know were to have a health need or emergency, it is good to be acquainted with a doctor who will be able to guide you. You will be more at ease in a time of stress with your familiar and trusted physician.
I like the time of a scheduled exam to be able to teach healthy habits. There is so much I want to be able to tell my patients. Every time I see someone in the office, I have some advice for disease prevention. There are many things we can add to our lifestyles to maintain good health and vigor. A little extra stretching, a simple dietary alteration, or new nutritional supplement for extra energy can improve the quality of someone’s life. For a few minutes in conjunction with a routine office visit, we can learn how to be healthy.
I recommend periodic physical exams for everyone. During these visits, I may have to diagnose and treat illness. But I also intend to teach and give comfort.
